The REFORM Alliance confirmed in a press release that co-founder Meek Mill helped pay the bail for 20 incarcerated women and five of them were released from Riverside Correctional Facility. The rapper said he could relate to the women’s situation because he was incarcerated during the holidays and was unable to see his son as reported by PEOPLE.

“It was devastating for me to be away from my son during the holidays when I was incarcerated. So I understand what these women and their families are going through. No one should have to spend the holidays in jail simply because they can’t afford bail. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help these women be with their families and loved ones during this special time of year.”

The initiative was launched by Meek Mill, Jay-Z, Michael Rubin, Robert Kraft and others where the goal is to reform laws nationwide in order to provide “stable communities” and “stronger families.

A justice system that holds people accountable and redirects back to work and wellbeing leads to stronger families and safer communities. Instead of keeping people trapped in a revolving door from probation/parole to prison — which costs taxpayers billions of dollars — we’re working to move people from the justice system into stability.”

It was started after Meek Mill was released from jail after he was wrongfully sentenced a two-four year sentence for popping a wheelie which launched the #FreeMeek movement. Since then, the program has worked to reform laws to help those who were wrongfully convicted for crimes.

The rapper also received praise online for helping out the women out with their bail.
