Massachusetts Parents & Teen Charged For Party That Led Entire School To Go Remote

Two Massachusetts parents and their teenage child have been charged for a party they hosted on September 12, which forced their town’s entire high school to go remote instead of opening for in-person learning on September 15. In addition to throwing a party amid a global pandemic, the parents and teen in Sudbury, MA were charged with supplying alcohol to underaged drinkers.

The three family members have been charged with violating the state’s social host law, which states that “whoever furnishes alcohol” to underage drinkers faces a fine of up to $2,000, imprisonment for up to a year, or both. Also, all were hit with misdemeanors. Upon police arrival to the Sept. 12 gathering, authorities spotted at least 50-60 Lincoln-Sudbury High School students who were not wearing masks nor social distancing.

Police say when they arrived, many teens fled to the woods or provided false names, which made it difficult to confirm any positive COVID-19 cases. Due to the lack of information on who attended, health officials say “the risk to the school community cannot be adequately assessed;” therefore, “Board of Health and Lincoln Sudbury Regional School High School (LSRHS), in consultation with the school physician, collectively decided to delay in-person learning.”
