Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.”
Shawn Wayans And Marlon Wayans Talk Return To ‘Scary Movie’ Franchise And Cancelling Cancel Culture
On Monday (May 18), Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans walked the carpet at Regal Cinemas inside Atlanta’s Atlantic Station. While speaking with Hollywood Unlocked, the Wayans brothers discussed their new movie, ‘Scary Movie 6,’ talked about the journey from the original film, and also spoke on ‘The Roast of Kevin Hart,’ and the joke Tony Hinchcliffe made about George Floyd.
When asked about returning to the ‘Scary Movie‘ franchise after notably being removed from ‘Scary Movie 3,’ ‘Scary Movie 4,’ and ‘Scary Movie 5,’ the Marlon began:
“For us, it’s all been great, man. You know, you have your ups and downs in life and at the end of the day, all you gotta do is keep walking your walk, walk God’s walk, and vengeance is God. We just did our thing and created other movies and created other franchises and we’re happy with that and, you know, God made this happen so we jumped back on board.”
Shawn added, “It’s a full circle moment.” When asked about canceling “cancel culture” 26 years after the first ‘Scary Movie‘ 6, Marlon shared:
“We got some outlandish stuff in this one. So, for us, great jokes and great comedy and the way we do our, with our brand, we try to make you feel good. We’re not trying to be offensive. We’ve always been just right, you know, we don’t go overboard. People don’t question what we do. From ‘In Living Color,’ to ‘I’m Gonna Git You Sucka’, to ‘Scary Movie,’ to ‘Don’t Be A Menace,’ to ‘Dance Flick,’ to ‘Wayans Brothers.’ If you like Wayans stuff, you’re gonna like ‘Scary Movie.’ This is our brand.”
Shawn added, “And it’s up to the audience to say we had enough of the ‘cancel culture,’ you know? But we want to laugh again.” Marlon continued, “Yeah, we just canceling the idea that you can’t laugh. I think people need to stop taking themselves so serious. Ever since social media came on board, everybody got an opinion.” Shawn added, “Everybody’s a critic.” Marlon continued, “Stop having an opinion about comedy. Shut up and laugh.”
Shawn Wayans And Marlon Wayans Talk Cancel Culture, Kevin Hart Roast And Tony Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd Joke: ‘It Wasn’t Funny Enough’
When asked about the Kevin Hart roast, and the idea of allowing comedians to hit below-the-belt with outlandish jokes, Marlon shared, “Well, roasts are bare-knuckle boxing. So, that’s part of that whole genre of comedy is, that’s what it is. It’s dark…”
Shawn interjected, “They’re supposed to take it there.” Marlon continued, “Yeah, but, you know, you got to understand that if you take it there and if you go there, man, you get that, ‘ooh,’ you got to make sure that that laugh is worth the offense. And, you know, sometimes that laugh doesn’t meet that same meter, so it falls flat on your face. So, you know.”
Shawn added, “But that should be the consequence, is that it didn’t get a laugh. So, you move on. You don’t harp on it, you know, it’s not a big deal. We denon’t need to cancel nobody.” Marlon continued, “You can’t cancel comedy because you’re canceling your own sense of humor.”
Hollywood Unlocked then asked Shawn and Marlon Wayans about Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about George Floyd during Kevin Hart’s Roast. When asked where the joke sits on the line of being outlandish (pure comedy) versus offensive (bad joke), Marlon replied:
“It just wasn’t funny enough. And, you know, in this case, it’s too sensitive, and he ain’t found the right joke. If you find the right joke and George Floyd’s family laughs, you did the right joke. Until then, you got to understand something, a mother lost a son, and if you’re gonna go there, you better come out with some laughs, and she better be laughing the hardest.”
