Local police in Alabama are on the search for a man who reportedly pretended to be a volunteer for the Salvation Army and stole their red donation kettle.
The Salvation Army is currently working with Montgomery police to figure out how the male suspect was able to steal the donation kettle. The theft occurred on Thursday and Salvation Army Lt. Bryan Farrington said the thief fled the scene after he was confronted about the crime. Now, he is asking the community for their help and be more aware when donating money for legitimate causes.
Farrington says the donations also help provide operation income for their branch as reported by WSFA.
“I’m not sure if the plan was taking it different places and using that as a way to get money from the community, but we felt like it was our responsibility to let the community know that if you see somebody out there that doesn’t have on a red apron, that’s not standing in front of one of the stores – the Walmart’s, the Winn-Dixie’s, the Belks, the Hobby Lobby’s, that doesn’t have a stand with a sign on it and the kettle will be chained to it. That’s not us,”
He also added that the donations are a bit short this year due to the pandemic and lack of volunteers.
“We are just trying to make do the best we can for this season so that in the upcoming year there is not a shortfall in our service to community,”
