Mayor Lightfoot, who’s faced several trials and tribulations while leading the city, has failed to get enough votes on Tuesday (February 28) in order to advance to a runoff election on April 4.

Being so, she ended up conceding at her party in downtown Chicago. She stated, “Obviously we didn’t win the election today, but I stand here with my head held high.”

Prior to the history she made tonight, Mayor Lightfoot became the city’s first Black woman and first openly gay person to serve as mayor.

But as mentioned, the Democratic incumbent’s attempt to be re-elected did not prevail. Instead, other candidates, former CEO of Chicago schools Paul Vallas and Cook County commissioner Brandon Johnson (who is backed by the Chicago Teachers Union) will face off on April 4.

Taking to Twitter, Mayor Lightfoot wrote, “Serving as your mayor has been the honor of a lifetime, and I am so grateful to all of you who have stood beside me these last four years. We’ve made significant progress building a safer, more equitable city. I thank each and every one of you for believing in me.”

Meanwhile, there’s a party on Twitter, where critics of Mayor Lightfoot are having a celebration now that she’s lost her re-election.

Most critics were telling Mayor Lightfoot to hit the road. One person said, “You just got voted out because of all the crime and violence, it was not safer.”

Another person said, “You have been the worst mayor that Chicago had ever seen. That is a great accomplishment. Congratulations.”

Another wrote, “You’re a total failure and a disgrace. Even your most loyal allies have abandoned you over the past 4 years. Now, Chicago just did the same by showing you the door. Don’t let it hit you on the way out.”
