Last month, Lizzo generously pledged to donate $500,000 from her upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V Wade, ruling that there is no constitutional right to abortion in the United States. The landmark legal decision has since been called an assault against human rights and a public health crisis.

At the time of her announcement, the “About That Time” singer pledged the enormous sum in a post on Twitter, which further mentioned that Live Nation would also be donating $500,000, bringing the total to a whopping $1 million. “I’m pledging $500k from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood. Live Nation agreed to match— to make it 1 MILLION dollars. We are going to give proceeds to @AbortionFunds as well! Thank you!”

And during her appearance on “What What Happens Live” this week, amid a busy promotional week to support her new album, “Special,” Lizzo touched on what made her want to make the generous deed. “I am about that action,” she told host Andy Cohen. “When people need help and I have resources or can help people get resources, I’m going to do it.”

Lizzo will kick off The Special Tour across North America, starting with her first show in Sunrise, Florida in September. The concerts will run through November with stops in cities including Los Angeles and New York.

Meanwhile, in June, the 34-year-old caused controversy after being accused of promoting “derogatory language” in her song “GRRRLS,” where she included the word “sp*z,” which, of course, has different meanings in the US and in the UK. In Britain, the offensive term is a slang word to describe an incompetent person whereas, in the US, it means to lose control or act weird.

The backlash seemed to have been strong enough for Lizzo to give an update on the situation and announce that the lyrics had been updated as she issued a sincere apology via her Twitter page. “It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘GRRRLS,” she wrote in her post. “Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language.”

“As a fat Black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me so I overstand the power words can have (whether intentionally or in my case, unintentionally.”

“I’m proud to say there’s a new version of GRRRLS with a lyric change. This is the result of me listening and taking action. As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”
