In 2019, the actor testified in Washington D.C as a witness who was involved in the film he helped produce with director Martin Scorcese. According to the Daily Mail, court documents stated that DiCaprio is scheduled to appear in the trial again, which is set to begin on November 4.

Prosecutors said Pras Michel’s involvement in the money laundering scheme was due to his connection to Malaysian businessman Jho Low, who allegedly embezzled billions from the country’s state-run economic development fund 1Malayasia Development Berhard. Michel reportedly received $8 million and $40 million for helping Low with the scheme.

After learning about the scheme in 2019, DiCaprio reportedly contacted the Department of Justice to assist them with the investigation. ‘Both Mr. DiCaprio and LDF continue to be entirely supportive of all efforts to assure that justice is done in this matter. Mr. DiCaprio is grateful for the lead and instruction of the government on how to accomplish this,’ his spokesperson said at the time.

Michel was previously charged in 2019 with helping Low defraud the United States by sending $21 million in an offshore account. Additionally, he allegedly funneled $1 million of the funds into former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign through different donors.

Other witnesses on the list include former Trump White House staffers, former chief of staff John Kelly, former deputy national security advisor Matt Pottinger, and former national security advisor H.R. McMaster. There is a list of 72 witnesses who will appear during the trial.

Low will not appear in the trial as it is unknown about his whereabouts. Reports claim he has escaped to China as the Malaysian government is allegedly doing nothing to detain him.
