Remembering Michael Sumler: A Musical Force and Friend to Many

Known in the music world as “Chicago Mike,” Sumler brought energy, soul, and joy to the stage for over three decades with Kool & the Gang.

On Saturday night, tragedy struck in Cobb County, Georgia. Just before midnight, Sumler’s vehicle collided with another on Veterans Memorial Highway near Buckner Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and colleagues in the music industry are still trying to process the loss. “It was a devastating blow,” said Adrian Meeks of Song Source Music Group. “It’s like, no, no, not Mike.”

Greg Williams of Switch Entertainment remembered, “He was the hype guy out of the group, getting the audience going.”

Beyond the Music: Michael’s Impact on the Industry and His Community

Michael wasn’t just a performer—he was a mentor, a connector, a motivator. Even well into his 70s, he stayed active in the music game, not just chasing the spotlight but holding it up for others to shine.

“He always wanted to see other people succeed in the business that he’d been around most of all his life,” said Meeks. “He was the bridge, you know, for inspiring artists and songwriters and producers and musicians to the legends.”

His generosity went deeper than advice. People say he was just real—a man who gave off warmth, who genuinely cared about the folks around him.

“He was always jovial, always just kind, always wanting to make sure everybody else around him was good,” Meeks added.

Williams called him “one of these people God put on the planet to teach people how to act because he was kind, he was thoughtful, he was intelligent, he was articulate, and he was the life of the party.”

Awaiting Memorial Details as Chicago and the Music World Mourn

At the time of this writing, funeral or memorial arrangements have not yet been announced. Friends are waiting to hear from Michael’s family, many of whom still live in his hometown of Chicago.

His legacy, however, is already being honored in the words and memories of those who knew him best. “Chicago. Chicago Mike. Great guy,” Meeks said. “He’ll be dearly missed.”

From concerts to community spaces, Michael Sumler left his mark not only as a legend in Kool & the Gang, but as a mentor and a light for everyone lucky enough to cross his path.
