Kim Potter, Ex-Officer Convicted In Fatal Shooting Of Daunte Wright, Sentenced To 2 years In Prison
Former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter was sentenced to just 24 months following her conviction in the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who she fatally shot during a traffic stop.
A Minnesota jury convicted Potter, 49, of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter in the April 11, 2021, incident. Potter, has said she mistakenly drew her gun instead of her Taser when she fatally shot Wright. She had pleaded not guilty to both charges with the maximum sentence for first-degree manslaughter being 15 years and a $30,000 fine and for second-degree manslaughter — 10 years and a $20,000 fine.
However, after crying and apologizing to Wright’s family today, she managed to convince a the judge that she was “remorseful.” Today Potter was handed down 24 months but she’s required to serve just two-thirds of that time (or 16 months) of her sentence in prison. With good behavior, she will be eligible for supervised release for the other third.
Wright’s mother spoke out after sentencing and shared how “disappointed” she was:
“Kim Potter murdered my son. Today, the justice system murdered him all over again.”
