Kelsey Nicole, born Kelsey Harris, is finally breaking her silence following the 2020 shooting involving her ex-best friend, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion, and ex-friend, Toronto rapper Tory Lanez. Nicole recalls how she first met both rappers and reveals Meg’s mom once thanked her for jumpstarting her daughter’s rap career.
While appearing on ‘The Danza Project,’ Kelsey Nicole Harris talked about her life, her career, and of course, the 2020 shooting that rocked the nation and had everyone glued to their phones and computers during the trial.
During her sit-down, Nicole recalled meeting the “Hot Girl Summer” rapper back in college at Prairie View A&M University. She revealed that the two grew closer and became more than friends when Meg invited her to a kickback one night and showed off her freestyling skills during a cypher with a few guys from the school’s basketball team.
While she may not have realized it at that moment and sometime later, Nicole reflected on the moment and said after the kickback she was so blown away that she began telling Meg what she needed to do next in order to take her kickback freestyles worldwide. Nicole told the ‘Danza Project‘ hosts that she had a father in the industry and had an ear for talent.
Unfortunately, at that time, she didn’t know all of the music business ins and outs and never knew to label herself as an A&R, manager, etc. However, looking back, she did take credit for jumpstarting Megan Thee Stallion’s rap career and even had her late mother confirm that she should indeed pat herself on the back.
Nicole revealed that during the video shoot for “Big Ole Freak,” Meg’s mom pulled her to the side and personally thanked her for helping Meg get to where they were. Nicole admitted that she wasn’t even looking for the credit, and still feels the same in the present day. She said she’s just happy that all of the work she put in from college and years later has paid off in Meg’s favor.
Later in the conversation, Kelsey Nicole confirmed that she believed she and Meg were best friends since that night and up until the 2020 shooting. She also revealed that because of how everything went down that night and the fallout, including her falling out with Meg, she is no longer open to making new friends and becoming as close as they once were.
When asked about how she met Tory Lanez, Kelsey Nicole said it was at JAY-Z‘s Roc Nation Brunch, where Meg and Tory are infamously seen being playful with their poses in front of the cameras. However, Nicole didn’t get into how she and Tory became so close and started messing around, claiming it was years ago and she is in a new relationship with a child now.
Kelsey Nicole also talked about her diss track towards Megan Thee Stallion, which she claimed she used to respond to Meg’s, bar for bar. Before the interview ended, she also flipped the script and put the ‘Danza Project‘ hosts in the hot seat and asked them who they thought was the shooter in the case.
For the record, Tory Lanez was convicted in the shooting in December 2022 for the July 2020 shooting and sentenced to 10 years in August 2023. He was found guilty of three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
Danza truthfully admitted that he pinned Nicole as the “scapegoat” because he’s a huge Tory Lanez fan and just couldn’t see one of his favorite rappers being guilty of such charges. Meanwhile, Danza’s co-host Kato said he was torn because there were so many conflicting stories and theories floating around. To Danza’s confession, Kelsey Nicole said she appreciated his honesty and knew a lot of people felt that way, but that’s not what happened. She further claimed that one day she may tell the entire story.
