Kelly Rowland sat down for an intimate interview on Angie Martinez’s “IRL” podcast this week to talk all things concerning motherhood, dealing with daddy issues stemming from her dad being absent for a great part of her life, and how she navigates parenting her two children because of it. Rowland, who is a mother of seven-year-old Titan and one-year-old Noah, expressed that she practices a much more nurturing way to her own parenting technique.

“You know, gentle parenting which is just like, ‘Don’t yell at them,’ you know, right when something happens. I love it. Some of it makes sense to me and some of it doesn’t,” the “Can’t Nobody” singer said. “Gentle parenting is trying to break the generational curse of talking at your kid and making them feel seen and respected.”

Rowland gave an example, saying that if Titan had stormed up the stairs in their family home, instead of using a harsh tone to denounce her son’s behavior, she would calmly say, “I understand you’re upset right now, but that is very disrespectful […] because I was just taught if you stomp up the stairs, ‘You better keep your a** in the room then,’ you know what I mean?”

The interview saw Rowland tackle a series of personal topics, including the relationship she formed with her long-lost dad, who she hadn’t spoken to in 30 years prior to reaching out to him back in 2018.

Earlier this year, however, the Destiny’s Child group member admitted that it was the heartwarming and sentimental words given to her by her longtime friend Jay-Z which ended up giving her the confidence in making the first move by setting up a potential get-together with her father.

As fans already know, Rowland was raised by her single mother, Doris Rowland Garrison, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 66. A few years after her passing, the singer started contemplating potentially forming a relationship with her father, given that he was still alive and she’d been yearning for a bond with him for so long.

Upon having a conversation with Jay about it, she recalled their conversation during an interview on the Today Show, recounting, He said, “‘Love is all about risk. You gotta decide if you’re gonna jump.’ You gonna jump?’ That’s what he asked me: ‘Are you gonna jump?’”

Rowland took the jump and set up a meeting with her father at a hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, where the pair talked out their differences for two hours and have remained on close terms ever since.
