Greg Mathis Jr. has opened up about his past battle with anxiety, which stemmed from his fear of having to come out one day. The reality star, who is currently starring on E!’s “Mathis Family Matters,” admitted to his longtime pal EJ Johnson that telling the world that he’s gay has plagued his life because he feared how his announcement could potentially hurt his father’s image.

In a previous episode, Greg Jr. revealed, “I do want to get into the advocacy space, LGBTQ advocacy. Part of it is the nervousness of coming out for myself publicly and saying, ‘I am gay.’ I’ve never done that before. Now with this announcement, I feel like it’s going to become Greg, Judge Mathis’ son, and this is who he is and this is what he’s saying.”

EJ agreed, adding that his friend’s decision to come out was “a big step.” Moments later, in a confessional scene, Greg Jr., who publicly came out last month, admitted that he still had some reservations about owning his sexuality in fear of affecting his dad’s career. “I do have a lot of anxiety about coming out to the world publicly […] What does that mean when his fans, who tend to be more conservative, find out about me? But at the same time I do recognize that this is bigger than me.”

EJ then recounts some of his memories with Greg Jr. during their younger years, insisting that he was shocked to find out that his friend hadn’t come out yet, particularly because the socialite was already aware of Greg Jr.’s sexuality. The 30-year-old was “taken aback” after being told, “I’m not out to these people so don’t mention it.”

“I’m like, ‘What, miss thing?'” EJ quipped. “We’ve been dancing and doing our thing all over the world. What are you talking about?”

Back in June, Greg Mathis told E! News how enraged he felt after hearing his son tell him that protecting his reputation seemed more of a priority to him than living his life in its most authentic form. “Anger at people, anger at homophobes, that’s how I felt,” he told the publication.

“I felt like I wanted to fight anybody that would administer an injustice, discrimination or any type of hostility based on sexual orientation. I wanted to get ‘em.”

The TV arbitrator hopes that his son’s journey can inspire others and promote LGBTQ+ acceptance in a broader way, particularly in the Black community. “Much of it is based on religious teachings,” he continued.

“We’re asking that judgment be set aside, and we want the Black church to fight for equality and against gay-bashing.”

  2. His son being gay so what. His son is who he is and the judge should. Be proud of him no matter what. It takes a lot for gay people to come out and admit it. No judgement here only god can do that.
