What do you get when you lock a no-nonsense, strong woman, well you get Joey King playing a kick butt, independent Princess.

That’s right, Hulu is taking the traditional princess to a new level with their new original film ‘The Princess’ starting King, directed by Le-Van Kiet and written by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton.

Hollywood Unlocked was on the carpet for the premiere where we spoke with the cast and crew about this reimagined princess.

Joey plays a princess who is locked away waiting to be married off. When she decides that’s not the route she wants to take she escapes in a pretty kick-butt way.

This film is all about betting on yourself as director Kiet told us during the interview on the carpet. When looking at a Disney princess which has been labeled traditional, it’s all about betting on who can save you, but in this case, Joey who is a Disney princess in her own lane is not only saving herself but saving those she cares about and her kingdom.

When speaking with the producers, writers, and directors who consist mostly of men, we asked what really went into portraying this princess in a way where she does not need a man and can defend herself. Many of them echoed the same sentiments sharing they thought of the most independent woman and putting those traits into this character.

Make sure to watch ‘The Princess’ streaming now on Hulu.
