Jennifer Lopez makes it no secret in her upcoming Netflix documentary, “Halftime,” that she was not happy when she was asked to share the Super Bowl Halftime Show stage with Shakira. The pair gave an incredible performance at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium in February 2020, as they entertained millions with some of their biggest hits, including “Hips Don’t Lie,” “On The Floor,” and “Whenever, Wherever.”
But according to the “Get Right” singer, she was not feeling the idea of having to limit her set so that the co-headlining act would have enough time to squeeze in her part. In her doc, which was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday at the United Palace Theater, she vented her frustration about not getting to do the Super Bowl show on her own, branding the duo gig “the worst idea in the world.”

Jennifer tried to explain to the NFL that she needed more time to put on her performance, but it seemed as if the organizers were not willing to budge with their decision. And while the mother-of-two never disclosed why she was made to share the stage with Shakira, her manager Benny Medina didn’t hold back when he added his two cents to the frustrating situation.
“It was an insult to think that you needed two Latinas to do the job that one artist historically has done,” he said. Shakira and Jennifer are then seen going over how they would put the show together, with J. Lo notably frustrated that she can’t add all of the staging elements and ideas she initially hoped to include in her set due to her limited performance.
“This is something I have been working for and hoping for years,” she is later heard saying in the documentary. Jennifer also butted heads with the NFL after she pitched having children in cages to send a political message to President Donald Trump for putting migrant kids in detention camps. Benny continued, “The NFL had a real concern about making a statement about immigration.”

Interestingly enough, even after the NFL requested for J. Lo to remove the cages from her set a day ahead of the show, she refused to make the changes and responded by saying her team would not alter any of the previously discussed plans.
Half of the “Halftime” documentary is focused on all things concerning Jennifer’s road to the Super Bowl and all the drama that came with the news that Shakira would be joining her. The doc also touches on the moment Jennifer lost out to receiving a nomination for her box office hit “Hustlers,” as J. Lo wept in disappointment after her team had given her high hopes she’d receive a nod for her portrayal of the character Ramona.
You can catch “Halftime’ June 14 on Netflix.
