Jay Z Under Fire For Decision To Host Oscars Party At Troubled Chateau Marmont

Jay Z is facing some criticism with his  decision to continue hosting his annual Oscar party at the Château Marmont despite the hotel’s troubling past with alleged discrimination and racism.

As we reported, a union and picket line will be surrounding the venue ahead of the evening’s festivities.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s annual Gold Party will be at the parking garage of the Marmont after Sunday’s awards.

Chateau Marmont  has been under fire for treating its employees in a discriminatory manner. There have been accusations of racial discrimination and sexual harassment. Celebrities such as Spike Lee, Issa Rae and  Gabrielle Union are behind the movement led by Unite Here Local 11.

“For Jay-Z to choose the Chateau Marmont for their Gold Party is shockingly insensitive,” Kurt Petersen, co-president of Unite Here Local 11, said. “They must move their event and choose an afterparty hot spot that treats its workers, especially Black women, with dignity and respect. Jay-Z has a responsibility to do better.” He added: “We hope Jay-Z joins Gabrielle Union, Spike Lee, Issa Rae, Robin Thede, Quinta Brunson, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roxane Gay, Ashley Nicole Black and Samira Wiley in boycotting Chateau Marmont.”

As we previously reported, former server Keisha Banks reported that she was repeatedly passed over for promotions because “it was certainly a place where it was clear if you were a white man, you had no issues.”

The union has planned a picket line that will commence at the start of the Oscars ceremony at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 27.
