Tech journalist Joanna Stern sat down with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and didn’t waste no time, asking him “Is AI going to kill us?” And Zuck?

Instead of dodging the question, he gave his honest answer. He laughed. Not a “nervous, oh-no-she-really-asked-that” laugh either more like a man who’s already thought about this a thousand times. He said if everybody does a good job and acts responsibly, then no, AI isn’t going to kill us…
Of course that’s a lot of faith to be putting in “everybody,” especially when “everybody” includes billion dollar companies racing each other to build the smartest, most powerful systems humanity has ever created. But Zuck doubled down, saying he’s genuinely optimistic this is gonna turn into a positive future for everybody, and he doesn’t think the industry needs to hold hands and coordinate to keep from messing it up.

This conversation didn’t come out of nowhere. It dropped right after a wave of panic hit the AI world when a former Anthropic researcher quit his job, citing fears about where this technology is headed. That set off a domino effect of execs at rival labs talking about slowing down, adding guardrails, maybe even needing the government to step in and watch these companies like a hawk.
But Zuck ain’t with that. He pointed out that Meta didn’t wait for anybody else to give the green light before making moves it felt were right, it just did what needed doing because it was clearly the right call for people and for the company.
While rivals like Anthropic’s Dario Amodei have
been pushing for the whole industry to slow down how fast AI improves itself, literally AI teaching itself to get smarter, faster, Zuckerberg’s stance is different. He said Meta has already put the bulk of its computing power toward building stuff that actually helps people in the here and now, instead of chasing systems that just keep leveling themselves up. He’s also pointing to Meta’s internal safety moves, bringing in outside evaluators to check the company’s work, as proof he’s not just talking safety, he’s practicing it, and calling it something every lab should be doing anyway.
