Maya Gunawan described her experience lending money to Liza Gewi after meeting her through an online group in a Facebook post. She decided to lend her $364 despite the fact that they had never met in person, and Gunawan conducted a background check by asking Gewi’s friends about her character. They responded that there were no issues to be concerned about. The loan was due on November 20, but Gewi requested an extension until December 6. Gewi did not pay her debt after the deadline passed.
A few days later, the creditor learned via Facebook that Gewi was killed in a car accident near a bridge in Medan, Indonesia. The post included photos of Gewi posed as a corpse with cotton balls in her nose in the post. Another photo showed hospital staff pushing a gurney covered in a white sheet.
