Illinois Gov. Activates National Guard After George Floyd Protests In Chicago Turn Violent
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has activated the National Guard after Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot requested their presence following violent George Floyd protests.
Mayor Lightfoot, who’s been outspoken through the coronavirus pandemic, continues through the current social justice protesting, sharing her hurt and anger amid the events in her city and nationwide. She scolded destructive demonstrators, “You should be ashamed of yourselves. What you have done is a dishonor to our city . . . and its long and proud legacy as a leader of bold and vibrant peaceful protest.”

On Twitter Saturday (May 30), Lightfoot reached out for help from the Gov, stating, “In addition to our 9pm-6am curfew that will remain in place until further notice, Governor Pritzker—at my request—has ordered a small contingent of the National Guard to maintain a limited presence and support our police in order to ensure we don’t have a repeat of last night.”
