New details have emerged regarding the tragic school shooting that occurred on Wednesday morning in Winder, Georgia. Authorities now confirm that four individuals lost their lives as a result of the shooting at Apalachee High School, while approximately 30 others sustained injuries. At this time, it remains unclear how many of the injured received gunshot wounds, according to law enforcement sources.

A suspect, reportedly of student age, has been taken into custody. However, officials have not released the suspect’s identity or any potential motive for the violent act. Additionally, it is still uncertain whether the suspect is a current student at the school.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith emphasized the ongoing investigation and the need for patience as authorities work to uncover the facts surrounding this tragic incident. “We are asking for your patience … please let us gather the information we need to ensure accuracy in our reporting,” Smith stated during a news conference on Wednesday afternoon. “This will take multiple days for us to determine what occurred and why it happened.”

Following a lockdown procedure, most students have been reunited with their parents, and buses were made available for those who were unable to be picked up immediately.

In a statement to ABC News, the White House reported that President Biden has been briefed by Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall regarding the shooting at Apalachee High School. The administration pledged to collaborate with federal, state, and local authorities as more information comes to light.

Meanwhile, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his condolences in a public statement: “My prayers are with the high school students, staff, and families affected by this senseless act of violence in Winder, Georgia. I have been in contact with Chief Schierbaum, and the Atlanta Police Department is working alongside the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department to enhance patrols around our schools for the remainder of the day out of an abundance of caution. APD is also on standby in case law enforcement agencies require assistance with this incident. May God provide comfort to the victims and their loved ones during these difficult days.”
