A Devastating Loss: Maryland Family Mourns After Daughter’s Flu Battle Turns Fatal
A heartbreaking tragedy out of Maryland has left an entire community shaken — and a mother dealing with the unimaginable pain of losing her sweet baby girl.
Little Minka Aisha Greene, just 10 years old, tragically passed away after developing severe complications from the flu. According to her mother, Kymesha, it was the first time her daughter had ever really gotten sick. What started out as a simple flu diagnosis ended in devastation — and now the family wants her story to be heard while strongly encouraging other parents to speak up and advocate for their kids.

It all began when Kymesha took Minka to the ER with flu symptoms and a urinary tract infection. Doctors sent her home with ibuprofen. But just days later, her symptoms worsened — and when Minka started screaming in pain, saying she couldn’t feel her legs and feet, her mother knew something was terribly wrong.
“I heard her screaming, ‘Mommy!’ And I’m like, ‘What’s wrong?’ That’s when she said she couldn’t feel her legs and her feet,” Kymesha told DC News Now.
‘She Was Screaming in Agony’: The Final Hours Before Minka’s Death
On the morning of February 6, things took a horrifying turn. Minka was vomiting and barely responsive. Her parents rushed her to the hospital, hoping for help. But it was already too late — doctors tried everything to save her, but Minka had no brain activity. She passed away just four days later, on February 10.
Her father David, overcome with grief, shared a memory that will forever be etched in his heart:
“That was the last time I carried her, the last time I held her in my arms. I will cherish that for the rest of my life.”
According to the family, Minka had not received a flu vaccine. Later, they were told her flu had caused severe brain inflammation — a rare but dangerous complication.
‘Advocate for Your Babies’: Parents Speak Out After Tragic Loss
This family’s pain is unimaginable, but their strength is powerful. Instead of staying silent, they are turning their grief into purpose, using their story to encourage other parents to speak up and push harder when they feel something is wrong with their child.
“Advocate for your babies,” Kymesha urged. “When they say they’re hurting, tell the doctors.”
Their message is loud and clear — parents, don’t second guess yourselves. If your child says something doesn’t feel right, fight for answers. Don’t take ‘it’s just the flu’ as enough.
What Parents Need to Know About Flu-Related Complications in Children
While most people recover from the flu in a few days, in rare cases like Minka’s, it can cause serious complications — even death. According to the CDC, flu-related encephalitis (brain inflammation) is rare but can affect children, especially those not vaccinated.
The CDC recommends annual flu shots for everyone six months and older. It may not prevent the flu entirely, but it can reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
Parents should watch out for these warning signs:
— Trouble breathing
— Chest pain
— Persistent vomiting
– Sudden confusion or drowsiness
— Muscle pain or weakness
— Unusual leg or arm pain
Don’t wait until it’s too late. If symptoms escalate, push for more testing. Trust your parental instincts.
