The four children were riding in the vehicle on Monday when 27-year-old Mandiko Kwadzo when he fatally shot their mother while she was driving the vehicle and caused her to crash into the Sacramento River. Authorities reported that three of the four children in the car were Kwadzo’s children and he was in a domestic partnership with their mother.

After hearing the crash, Harrell Fischer and another stranger ran down to the scene where the car was halfway into the water. He said,”John opened up the door and I saw a little face look up at me and I was just like, ‘Wow.’ And then I saw little hands trying to poke out too. So, we got all the kids out of the car. There were four of them, the one and then another, and we just put them all on the boat.”

The good Samaritan took the children to a nearby dock to wait for paramedics and police to arrive. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a report that the children’s mother was still in the car when they discovered the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics stated all four children are fine and were unharmed in the crash.

Fischer said he is still in disbelief about the entire situation and prays that the children will be blessed for the rest of their life.

“I’m still beside myself, it doesn’t seem real. That’s on TV, you know, but right there it was real. Those kids’ lives are changed forever. They are not going to have daddy or a momma. I just pray that they get so many blessings and get loved on for the rest of their lives.”

Kwadzo has been arrested and charged with murder.
