A Georgia woman in Florida, accused of going on a shooting spree and shooting random drivers on an interstate during Monday’s total solar eclipse, claims God told her to do it. According to Florida news outlet WESH, the woman checked out of a Florida hotel and told the staff that she was going on a God-directed shooting spree “in relation to the solar eclipse.”

On Monday (April 8), the Florida Highway Patrol shared a news release stating that there was an active shooter on Florida’s Interstate 10 traveling westbound near the area of Bonifay. 22-year-old Taylon Nichelle Celestine, originally from Georgia, was later identified as the suspect who had entered the highway at the 112-mile marker while driving a purple Dodge Challenger.

After entering Florida’s Interstate 10, within the first 5 miles, the woman allegedly began firing into a passing car “multiple times,” resulting in a bullet and broken glass fragments grazing and striking the driver in the arm. However, officials noted that the male driver was still able to steer his vehicle onto the shoulder of the road, away from the suspect and other cars.

As the woman continued westbound on I-10, she then fired at a second vehicle near the 107-mile marker, hitting the driver in the neck. That driver was injured and transported to a nearby hospital, where they were given treatment. Florida Highway Patrol troopers responding to the call eventually located the Georgia woman near the 96-mile marker and conducted a felony traffic stop.

When the FHP troopers finally got the woman to stop her vehicle, she had made it about 16 miles down the highway from where she entered. Upon taking the woman into police custody, without incident, troopers searched her vehicle and recovered an AR-15 rifle and 9mm handgun. She was booked into the Holmes County Jail and charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and improper discharge of a firearm.

At the time of the Georgia woman’s shooting spree arrest, the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office stated, “Currently, there appear to be two victims. One has been cleared and released, and the other is receiving medical attention. No remaining threat to the community.” The incident remains under ongoing investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol Bureau of Investigations and Intelligence (BCII).
