Gayle King recently spoke to best friend, Oprah Winfrey on her “WW Presents Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour” where she revealed that Ivanka Trump reached out to her during the time where she was dealing with Kobe Bryant backlash, after she asked Kobe’s friend Lisa Leslie about his past.

“It’s been said that his legacy is complicated because of a sexual assault charge which was dismissed in 2003, 2004…Is it complicated for you, as a woman, as a WNBA player?”

King received backlash because people believed that she continued to push Leslie despite the recent loss of Bryant. As we reported, King said it was a very painful time for her, but it’s also been revealed that she had a few unlikely supporters at the time,

“What surprised me is the people that came to reach out to me in unexpected places,” she added. “Ivanka Trump, it’s not like I’m hanging out at The White House, but Ivanka Trump reached out to me to say, ‘Are you OK? I’m sorry that this is happening to you.’ I mean, I have to say I was very touched by that.”

In response to Gayle’s comments, Oprah responded,

“In every circumstance, I think this is something for us to remember…It’s not the people who are being mean, it’s not the badness, it’s not the vitriol that’s being put into the world, but it’s the good people who remain silent that becomes so hurtful.”
