Kristina Desgres and Rodrigo Velasquez had their son in September of last year. However, they do not have their son’s official birth certificate or the ‘livret de Famille, because the public prosecutor of Saint-Malo refuses to approve the baby boy’s name, as reported by Oddity Central. Hades is known in Greek mythology as the god of the underworld, and the couple said the name didn’t shock anyone after their son was born.

“Nobody makes the connection. In the maternity ward, it didn’t shock anyone. On the contrary, people like it. We chose this name simply because we thought it was pretty. Hades Velasquez Desgres sounds good,” Desgres argued. However, the public prosecutor deemed the boy’s name inappropriate.

She added that the name isn’t harmful to anyone and wanted originality when it came to their son’s name: “We do not understand this decision. We do not believe that we have chosen a first name that is prejudicial to him. We didn’t call him Lucifer or Satan, we’re not stupid. We just wanted an original first name, which sounds good. When Rodrigo suggested ‘Hadès’ to me, I immediately liked it.”

A lawyer was hired to help with the couple’s case as they did further research and learned that other couples have issued the same name to their children without any issues. Additionally, they contacted the parents to see if their children grew up without any issues of being teased for the unique name. “It’s an old first name which is not ridiculous, and we really don’t see why the Saint-Malo public prosecutor’s office decided to sue while the other public prosecutor’s offices in France had no objection to this first name,” their lawyer explained.

The court is expected to make its decision on April 4.

Although unique baby names are nothing new, some baby names have people left people guessing.
