The tragic news of the murder of Chicago police officer Aréanah Preston over the weekend has rocked the city. Four teenagers have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing.
Trevell Breeland, 19, Joseph Brooks 19, Jakwon Buchanan, 18, and an unnamed 16-year-old (not pictured), have also been charged with other crimes, including armed robbery, arson, burglary, possession of stolen property, and unlawful use of a weapon. Officer Preston was shot in the early hours on Saturday while she was returning home from her shift, still wearing her uniform. The group, according to police, had been linked to a number of burglaries hours before the incident and that they were out “looking for victims in the overnight hours of Friday.”
The teens were said to have approached Preston and engaged in a shootout after firing the first shot at her. She was eventually hit before one of the teens allegedly took her gun and fled the scene. A fellow cop later located Preston near her home and she was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. “I ask that everyone continue to pray for Aréanah’s family as they navigate this world without her,” Interim Chicago Police Supt. Eric Carter said.
“While Aréanah is not physically here with us, her spirit and service of kindness will carry on and we will never forget her.” The four suspects are now being held without bond. The police department has expressed its appreciation for the hard work and dedication of those involved in the investigation that led to the arrests. Officer Preston had just graduated with a Masters of Jurisprudence from Loyola University and had been serving with the Chicago Police Department for three years.
Chicago has long been known for its high crime rate, particularly when it comes to gun violence. The city suffers disproportionately from gun violence when compared to other cities, and some neighborhoods, particularly Black and Brown communities, are disproportionately affected.
As per a report titled “A Comprehensive Plan to Reduce Violence in Chicago,” while violent crimes not involving firearms have decreased since the mid-2000s, the number of violent crime arrests involving youth has increased, with teens being the most affected. The report also highlights that Chicago is home to a significant number of gangs, which often engage in violent crimes, and many of these gangs recruit teens.

The rise in teen involvement in violent crimes is concerning as it not only puts their lives at risk but also affects the overall safety of the city. While it’s challenging to pinpoint the exact cause of this trend, experts suggest that poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and easy access to firearms are some of the contributing factors.
In addition, many teens from marginalized communities face systemic issues such as discrimination and limited access to resources, which can push them toward criminal activities.
To address this issue, community-engaged research is being conducted to develop a Chicago violence prevention plan that involves community members in the decision-making process.
The goal is to come up with a comprehensive plan that addresses root causes while also providing support and resources to at-risk youth. The plan aims to create more educational and employment opportunities for teens as well as increase access to mental health services. It also includes initiatives aimed at reducing availability and access to firearms.
