Florida Woman Sentenced To 30 Days In Jail After Coughing On Cancer Patient

Debra Hunter, a 53-year-old Jacksonville, Florida woman, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after intentionally coughing on a cancer patient, identified as Heather Sprague — and it was all captured on cell phone video.

While the incident went down in a Pier 1 store last year amid the coronavirus pandemic, a judge has now ordered the woman on Thursday (Apr. 8), to pay a $500 fine, serve 30 days in jail and six months probation, and undergo a mental health evaluation, plus anger management. Hunter was also ordered to cover the costs of the victim’s COVID-19 testing.

It’s reported that Hunter has received credit for one day in jail already after her arrest last June. Investigators say on the day of the incident, Hunter was in a heated encounter with the employees when Sprague, the victim who is being treated for a brain tumor, pulled out her phone to capture the confrontation. When Hunter saw her, she made a rude gesture, walked up and threatened to cough on her before eventually doing it. Fortunately, Sprague tested negative for coronavirus after the incident.
