Larry Scirotto,48, was fired on Thursday after several allegations claimed he allegedly hiring and promoting only minorities with an “improper minoriy-first” approach. Scirotto was promoted to the position six months ago and previously worked as assistant police chief in Pittsburgh. He is also the first openly-gay police chief in Fort Lauderdale and has a mixed-race background.
The complaints stated Scirotto was unfairly focused on minority candidates for positions and he reportedly commented on how the photos in a conference room were “too white” then added, “I’m going to change that.”

An investigative report concluded that there was some sort of division under Scirotto’s leadership but there were legal procedures that he needed to follow in order to hire more minorities.
“While the goal to diversify is an important and laudable goal it must be accomplished in a legally permissible manner.”
