A Florida man has been arrested after authorities say he attempted to burn down his apartment and later told deputies the “Holy Spirit” instructed him to do it. According to CBS 12, 57-year-old Jeffrey Knapp was taken into custody on Sunday following the alleged arson attempt.
Investigators say the situation began with an unusual request. A neighbor told deputies that Knapp knocked on her door, demanding an apple. When she told him she didn’t have any, he reportedly became agitated. Authorities say Knapp then began cutting his hair outside before returning to his apartment.
Smoke Alarms and 911 Call
The neighbor reported that shortly afterward, smoke alarms began sounding.
She noticed smoke coming from Knapp’s apartment and immediately pulled the building’s fire alarm before calling 911. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to make contact with Knapp.
Authorities state that he refused to open the door, forcing emergency crews to break it down. Inside, deputies reportedly found Knapp sitting in the middle of the living room smoking a cigarette. Officials say an open gas flame from the kitchen stove was burning electronics, papers, and a battery.
Alleged Confession and Arrest
Deputies say Knapp admitted to starting the fire. According to the arrest report, he allegedly told officers that he lit a Bible on fire because the “Holy Spirit told him to.”
During the arrest process, officials say Knapp attempted to lunge at the neighbor who had called 911. He now faces charges related to arson and resisting arrest.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding his mental state or whether further evaluations will be conducted.
The investigation remains ongoing.
