After making headlines for making an appearance at a recent Taylor Swift concert in Detroit — where he officially declared himself a Swiftie, which is what the popstar calls her dedicated, super fans — Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav gets a little more serious and takes a moment to reflect on his sobriety.

On Friday (June 16), Flav took to his Instagram to open up about his journey to recovery, where he not only mentions how he has been 3 years clean from smoking cigarettes, but how he has also been sober from drugs and alcohol. In his celebratory and heartfelt post, Flav began, “I’ve changed. Today I am 3 years clean from cigarettes that I started smoking when I was just 6 years old.”

Flav, who has struggled publicly with addiction to drugs and alcohol for many years, continued to write, “Soon I’ll be 3 years sober from alcohol. And I’ve been 15+ years sober from drugs. I’m proud to share my sobriety journey, and thankx to my friends and family and those who support me.”

Flav went on to share some words of encouragement and motivation to those who are on similar journeys. He said, “To everyone out there struggling with addiction, it is a real battle you fight every day. But I’m still here and you know what.. I DID IT.. and if I can do it.. anyone can do it!!!”

Flav also addressed the media, calling out the publications and outlets who ‘capitalize’ and ‘sensationalize’ his past for views and clicks. He blasted, “To every media outlet that tries to capitalize on my goodwill trending topics, and bring up my past or old interviews for sensational click bait headlines, do better and bring up my future.”

The notorious clock-wearing rapper continued to scold them and offered, “Allow for people to grow and change in a supportive manner, and don’t let anyone hold you to your past. I wear the clock, my clock goes clockwise not counter clockwise. Look forward not backwards.”

Prior to Flav’s recent uplifting sobriety update, earlier this year he spoke with DJ Akademiks on his ‘Off The Recordpodcast about his journey to sobriety. He also got real about just how serious his addiction got. During his conversation with Akademiks, Flav admitted that there was once a time in his life when he dished out more than $2,000 a day on drugs.

Flav revealed,“I kind of maintained myself very well while I was on that sh*t, you feel me? And not only that, but I kept it hidden. A lot of people didn’t really know and they were trying to figure out. Like, ‘Yo is he on something? ‘Cause I never really let people know what exactly what I was doing. I started letting people know what I was doing when I was getting tired of being like that. Because there’s a point in time in life to where you get tired of doing sh*t, man. Mainly, when it doesn’t get you no place.””

He continued, “There was a time that I was spending $2,400-$2,600 a day for six years straight. You do the math. And that’s how much I spent on drugs I ain’t gonna lie, I sold a lot. But, I was my best customer. I had a lot. And I had a lot of money at the time. I was just doing the wrong things with my money. But, I guess God wanted me to live. And he knows that I’m a mouthpiece to the world. So, I feel like God let me live through that so that way I could teach people about the mistakes that I made; and hopefully they won’t make them later on in life.”
