Senator Sheldon Whitehouse(Rhode Island-D) sent a letter to Merrick Garland to look into the issue after it was discovered that the FBI allegedly conducted a “fake” background check in 2018 after Kavanaugh was nominated for the Supreme Court. Whitehouse is a seated member of the Judiciary Committee and he is requesting for a senate review of the FBI’s actions that year. His letter states that the FBI did not assign anyone to look into the case and collect evidence along with contacting witnesses to confirm their testimonies. There was a tip line for witnesses to come forward but that information appeared to be non-existent.

“We could get no explanation of the tip line procedure. This ‘tip line’ appears to have operated more like a garbage chute, with everything that came down the chute consigned without review to the figurative dumpster.”

Additionally, the FBI and director Christopher Wray have refused to answer the Judiciary Committee’s questions about their procedures.
