Eminem surprised the Academy Awards audience and viewers at home after he emerged from the stage and performed his Oscar-winning hit “Lose Yourself”

Before his surprising performance, Lin Manuel Miranda introduced famous songs from several films in a montage clip. The opening number for “Lose Yourself” begins and for a minute, everyone was stunned by Em’s appearance before giving him a standing ovation. Shortly after his performance, Eminem tweeted that it took him 18 years to appear on the Oscar stage after winning “Best Orginal Song” for 8 Mile:

In case you forgot, Eminem said during an interview in 2007 that he didn’t believe he could get nominated for an Oscar.

“I just felt like I had no chance of winning because, you know, when I heard I was nominated, I thought that was for actors,” he said.  I was not sure what exactly Grammy or Oscar meant, what certain awards meant, I was not sure what they meant, so even MTV awards, all that stuff, I just didn’t know what awards meant and this particular award…I didn’t go to the show… I just felt like I had a snowball’s chance of hell of winning.”
