Results from the St. Louis County Board of Elections show that Ella Jones took 54% of the vote in the race for mayor of Ferguson versus Heather Robinett with 46%. Both Jones, 65, and her opponent Robinett, 49, had both vowed to continue changes enacted after the 2014 police shooting death of Michael Brown. They also had made it clear that they supported peaceful protests after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis while condemning the violence that has broken out in several cities.
Mayor Ella Jones ultimately defeated her opponent and is now both the city’s first black mayor and the first woman in that office, according to KMOV.
“It’s just our time,” Jones told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s just my time to do right by the people.” When she was asked what her historic election would mean for Ferguson’s black residents, she simply said, “One word: inclusion.”
