As we previously shared, on Monday (May 18), Trump voluntarily dropped his lawsuit against the IRS, which he first filed in January.

In the lawsuit, Trump, two of his sons, and the Trump family business sued the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for leaking their tax returns during Trump’s first term. The Trumps accused the agency of failing to protect them as a former contractor disclosed their tax information to The New York Times, ProPublica, and other media.

In settling the lawsuit, the Department of Justice (DOJ) agreed to create a nearly $1.8 billion ”anti-weaponization” fund, which would compensate Trump’s allies and help to protect him, his family, and businesses form pending audits and tax prosecutions.

Since news of Trump’s IRS settlement and DOJ’s $1.7B fund, he is now defending the use of taxpayer dollars to cover the “reimbursement” to January 6 rioters. He claims they were “treated brutally by a corrupt system” and had their “lives destroyed.”

“Well, it’s been very well received, I have to tell you. I know very little about it. I wasn’t involved in the whole creation of it, and the negotiation. But, this is reimbursing people that were horribly treated, horribly treated. It’s anti-weaponization, they’ve been weaponized. They’ve been, in some cases, imprisoned wrongly. They’ve paid legal fees that they didn’t have. They’ve gone bankrupt. Their lives have been destroyed. And they turned out to be right. I mean, it was a terrible period of time in the history of country, and they worked on it. I know the Justice Department has really been working on it, very hard. There’s been numerous occasions over the years where things like this have been done. But, these were people that were weaponized and really treated brutally by a system that so corrupt with corrupt people running it, and they’re getting reimbursed for their legal fees and the other things that they had to suffer.”

Additionally, as part of Trump’s settlement deal, the DOJ agreed to block the IRS from pursuing past and present audits of Trump, his family, and businesses.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche signed the one-page document, barring the IRS from further investigating pending tax claims against President Trump, his family members, and businesses. Tax experts and critics have since raised concerns that this is illegal.

Furthermore, Blanche’s document read:

  • The Settlement Agreement in Trump v. Internal Revenue Service, No. 1:26-cv-20609 (S.D. Fla.), has created the Anti-Weaponization Fund (the “Fund”‘). The Settlement Agreement directed the Attorney General to issue an order establishing funding and any other relevant requirements for the Fund.
  • Capitalized terms in this document shall have the same meaning as in the Settlement Agreement.
  • The United States RELEASES, WAIVES, ACQUITS, and FOREVER DISCHARGES each of the Plaintiffs from, and is hereby FOREVER BARRED and PRECLUDED from prosecuting or pursuing, any and all claims, counterclaims, causes of action, appeals, or requests for any relief, including injunctive relief, monetary relief, damages, examinations or similar or related reviews, appeals, debt relief, costs, attorney’s fees, expenses, and/or interest, whether presently known or unknown, that-as of the Effective Date of the Settlement Agreement-have been or could have been asserted by Defendants against any of the Plaintiffs or related or affiliated individuals (including, without limitation, family or others filing jointly), or parties including trusts, parent, sister, or related companies, affiliates, and subsidiaries, by reason of, with respect to, in connection with, or which arise out of (1) any matters that were raised or could have been raised in the Case or the Pending Agency Claims; (2) Lawfare and/or Weaponization; or (3) any matters currently pending or that could be pending (including tax returns filed before the Effective Date) before Defendants or other agencies or departments.
