President Donald Trump is turning heads after making some unexpected comments about Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) during a campaign rally in Ohio.
While taking the stage in Youngstown late Monday for his second campaign-style rally in the state in just 10 days, Trump had plenty to say about the senator’s impressive physique, telling the crowd that he does not “do this with men very often.”
“I started examining his body because I didn’t know he was a great athlete,” Trump said. “And I looked and I watched up and down, I looked at his a–, and I looked at the whole — and then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He’s got these like claws. And I got it.”
The unexpected remarks quickly sparked laughter among attendees before making the rounds on social media. Trump appeared to be referring to Husted’s athletic background, as the Ohio senator previously played college football as an All-American defensive back at the University of Dayton.
“I didn’t know that because he doesn’t talk about that,” the president added. And Trump wasn’t done there. The president went on to joke that he “hurt” his own hand after patting Husted on the back while welcoming him to the stage. “He’s like a piece of steel,” he said.
The moment came as Trump continued his campaign push for Husted and Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, marking another stop on his 32-day campaign blitz ahead of the November midterm elections.
Husted, who is fighting to hold onto his Senate seat, faces a competitive showdown against former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). The stakes are particularly notable given that Trump carried Ohio by 11 percentage points just two years ago.
“Ohio is going to prove that America does not belong to those who hate it,” Trump said. “America belongs to those who love it.”
