Nichols says it was an automatic connection with the dog not just because he and John are a part of the LGBTQ community, but because they faced plenty of discrimination in the past as well. Once they were accepted to do adopt the dog they thought it would be a great idea to change his name to ‘Oscar.’

According to his new parents they named him Oscar because it is after a famous poet and play writer named Oscar Wilde who was also gay.
Once the news broke about the dog being disowned by its human parents it sparked a lot of outrage on Twitter and Instagram. Rapper, Cardi B shared a tweet saying, “Can dogs be gay or lesbian?” which many of fans replied back saying that’s what dogs do.
