Mandy Hayes,60, had her fair share of coronavirus symptoms such as sore throat, losing her sense of smell, and dry cough for several weeks. One day, she caught her Alaskan Malamute Mushka chewing on a used tissue that was left on her nightstand. Although experts say the virus cannot be transmitted from animals to humans, Hayes said her dog began to experience symptoms two weeks after he chewed on her tissue.

She says he was experiencing dry cough and breathlessness and when she took him to his veterinarian, they dismissed his symptoms as kennel cough. A CT scan revealed he had fluid in his lungs which indicated he had a severe form of coronavirus. Doctors advised Hayes to euthanize Muskha but she refused and told them to give him steroids.

She told Metro UK,‘I know he had it. We nearly lost him. When the CT scan revealed lungs full of fluid I asked can he have caught it from me, but the vet said “no”. At that time, the American Kennel Club had on their website that dogs, cats should be sent away to be looked after, if someone had virus in household. The UK Kennel Club statement was “no known cases”. This has made me very angry. I know my dog had it. ‘I have video clips of him when he was suffering, showing him coughing, and very unwell.’

She says she and Muskha are currently recovering but urged pet owners to be more aware about the virus and it’s symptoms.
