Whew! things were looking like they could go all the way left this week, but for now it seems like the brakes got tapped at the last minute.

After tensions shot through the roof following a sudden attack that had folks worldwide on edge, former President Donald Trump has signaled he’s willing to cool things down, at least for now.

As previously reported, on Wednesday, Trump took to Truth Social to announce that the U.S. would pause further attacks on Iran for two weeks, but only if Iran agreed to reopen a critical global shipping route.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stepped to the podium Wednesday and tried to frame the situation as a calculated move rather than a last-minute pivot. Speaking to reporters, Hegseth described Trump as “a president of peace,” even though just a day earlier, Trump had issued wild threats, warning Iran of massive consequences.

During that same briefing, Hegseth made it clear the military wasn’t bluffing. He revealed that U.S. forces “had a target set locked and loaded of infrastructure, bridges, and power plants” if Iran didn’t agree to the ceasefire by the Tuesday night deadline. It’s worth noting that targeting civilian infrastructure falls under war crimes according to international law outlined in the Geneva Conventions, something that had critics raising eyebrows fast.

Hegseth doubled down on the administration’s stance against Iran, saying, “Remember, this is a terror regime, a military regime, use all of these things for dual-use to fund their military, their terror campaign.” He also insisted that American troops were not being unnecessarily put in danger, adding, “Not a single thing we’ve done has put more American troops in harm’s way. We’ve only set our troops up for Iranian military capabilities.”

Right now, the world is basically holding its breath. A temporary pause is on the table, but with military forces still positioned and tensions still sky-high, folks are watching closely to see whether this ceasefire turns into something lasting, or just a short timeout before things heat up all over again.
