DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Calls For Washington Redskins Name Change, ‘It’s Past Time’
After she had the road leading to the White House painted with “Black Lives Matter” — which she’s now being sued for — Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is now calling for the NFL to change the name of the Washington Redskins.
While the team and the league have faced controversy for years over the name, Bowser says, “It’s past time” to re-brand. Echoing her sentiments is U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who called out the team after they posted a black square for Blackout Tuesday. She tweeted, “Want to really stand for racial justice? Change your name.”

Furthermore, Bowser states, “I think it’s past time for the team to deal with what offends so many people and this is a great franchise with a great history that’s beloved in Washington and it deserves a name that reflects the affection that we’ve built for the team.”
Bowser also feels like the team’s name has hurt the city’s chances of getting a new stadium. She explains, “It’s an obstacle for us locally but is also an obstacle for the federal government who leases the land to us.”
