Prosecutors have opposed Courtney Clenney’s request to keep evidence a secret in the murder case after her lawyer asked a judge to limit what could be revealed to the public.

The assistant state attorney of Clenney’s defense lawyer, Frank Prieto, claimed prosecutors continued to make frequent statements about the murder of Christian Obumseli to the media and accused Miami State Attorney Kathie Fernandez of sharing the surveillance footage of Clenney and Obumseli’s physical altercation in an elevator during a press conference.
“It’s been the defense that has been frankly keeping this case within media attention. Mr. Obumseli was dead for five days and the defense was making statements to the media both in print and on television and local news,” he explained. According to the New York Post, the motion was filed on Thursday, and Clenney remains locked up at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

Prieto also accused prosecutors of leaking the footage as “an attempt by the government to prejudice and taint potential jury members against the defendant.” The attorney maintains the defense that Clenney attacked Obumseli in self-defense after he reportedly strangled her. An emergency motion was also filed to preserve Obumseli’s body for inspection, but he was already laid to rest in Dallas, Texas. The attorney, Larry Handfield, said exhuming the body is against their religion and would add more trauma to the family. A judge said during the Zoom meeting that she would issue a decision on the motion after conducting a hearing.
As previously reported, Clenney was arrested in Miami four months after she allegedly stabbed Obumseli to death. Initially, she was cleared by Miami Police after claiming she acted in self-defense, but Obumseli’s family hired Handifield, and he pressured them to look further into the case. It is still unclear what their argument was about before the deadly stabbing, but they had several instances of physical and verbal arguments throughout their two-year relationship. Days after the stabbing, Clenney was seen drinking with her father, which led to public outrage.
She was arrested in July 2020 after throwing a glass at Obumseli’s head in Las Vegas. Clenney is expected to return to Florida as she didn’t oppose extradition.
