Authorities in Colorado are reminding residents to lock their vehicles after a black bear was found dead inside an unlocked car.

According to The Independent, the approximately 250-pound black bear entered the vehicle in Colorado Springs but was unable to get back out. Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the bear destroyed the interior as it attempted to escape. Trapped inside the vehicle during the summer heat, the animal later died.

The bear’s body reportedly remained inside the vehicle for several days before it was discovered.

Wildlife Officials Urge Residents to Secure Their Vehicles

In a statement, Colorado Parks and Wildlife urged drivers to keep their vehicle doors and windows closed and locked to prevent wildlife from entering.

The agency also advised residents to remove food, trash, and other scented items from their vehicles, which can attract bears. Officials said bears have an excellent sense of smell and can be drawn to even small amounts of food left inside a car.

Second Incident Highlights Ongoing Problem

The fatal incident comes just weeks after another bear became trapped inside a vehicle in Manitou Springs on July 29.

While that bear survived, wildlife officials said the two incidents underscore the importance of taking precautions to prevent similar encounters.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife continues to remind residents and visitors that securing vehicles and eliminating food attractants can help protect both people and wildlife.
