The initiative was announced on the organization’s website earlier today amid the police brutality protests occurring in Minneapolis to bring justice for George Floyd. The Know Your Rights Legal Defense Initiative states they have teamed up “with top defense lawyers in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area to provide legal resources for those in need. When there is an injustice within our community, it is our legal right to address it, by any means necessary.”
What we know so far is that former MPD officer Derek Chauvin is charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter as per his arrest earlier today. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement that they found “no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation” that contributed to Floyd’s death. An investigation is ongoing for Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng, the three officers who were also involved in Floyd’s death.

During a press conference, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz(D) called the protests in Minnesota and St. Paul a result of ‘generations of pain, of anguish’ over racism in policing and the ashes are symbolic of decades and generations of pain, of anguish.’ In the aftermath of the protests, Mayor Jacob Frey has ordered a mandatory curfew on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
