Applegate, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, had a few choice words for Candace Owens after she made controversial comments about a model in a wheelchair who appeared in the latest SKIMS campaign. The “Dead To Me” actress tweeted: “Yes late tweet. But woke to see the most horrifying thing. This Candace person making comments about companies who see we need help. It’s fucking gross. I thank skims and Tommy and Guide beauty and @neowalksticks for seeing us too, #youshouldknowbetter”
She followed up with another tweet where she told Owens she has to have assistance from her team due to her MS, as it is difficult for her to put on clothing as reported by TOO FAB. “Going to try and sleep but my rage is keeping me awake. Candace Owens, do you know when you have seen pictures of me how f*cking hard it was to get my clothes on? A team has to help me!!! So I’m excited for accessibility clothing for me and my community.Hope u wake,” Applegate added.

I thought my last tweet was enough. But then my heart said something else. No rage. If Candace wants to get on the phone with me to be educated on being disabled. I will not come with anger. I will come with love. Because she needs to hear that. I pray for her tonight.sincerely

As previously reported, Candace Owens faced backlash for her commentary on her podcast for the Daily Read regarding the SKIMS campaign, which was praised for its inclusivity in featuring models with disabilities.
“I don’t really understand how far we’re going to take this inclusivity thing I really don’t get it. I’ve never really seen a bra and underwear advertisement with a girl in a wheelchair. Why did they do this? I don’t know, and I don’t know why this needed to be done, but I’m just getting tired of this all-inclusivity thing it all just seems ridiculous.”
Owens also responded to Applegate’s tweets and said she was a big fan of the actress.
Hey Christina— huge fan of yours. Would welcome a discussion with you.

I think Christina, that what you may have missed is that covering absurd DEI initiatives is a recurring beat on my show.
We actually did not know that this particular ad featured a specific technology designed for people with disabilities, which was an honest mistake.— Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) March 23, 2023
What we thought it was at the time, was another nonsensical “representation matters” DEI initiative which I strongly feel patronizes the people it purports to represent.
(Example: clinically obese people modeling swimsuits).
This wasn’t that and we simply got it wrong.

We create a show 5 days a week. It is an impossibility that we would not at some point make an honest mistake.
If you felt personally targeted by this mistake, I apologize to you.
We simply did not know (the ad did not state) that the underwear was created for disabled access.

Other Twitter users responded to Owens and said her team should’ve done a better job of doing the research before making comments about other communities. One user wrote, “So you don’t research your “news” show. Interesting. And this wasn’t a statement that can be found in your main feed. Maybe do a show with a retraction and have folx on who can actually discuss the conversation with an informed voice.”
