A Kentucky high school student was expelled after school officials saw a photo of her wearing a rainbow sweater and smiling next to her rainbow birthday cake.

According to NBC News, Kimberly Alford posted a photo of her 15-year-old daughter, Kayla, celebrating her birthday where she smiled and wore a rainbow sweater to match her rainbow birthday cake on Facebook. After posting the photo, Alford received a letter from the Whitefield Academy where it stated that the freshman student will be expelled based on the context of the photo.

“The WA Administration has been made aware of a recent picture, posted on social media, which demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs. We made it clear that any further promotion, celebration, or any other actions and attitudes that are counter to Whitefield’s philosophy would not be tolerated. As a result, we regret to inform you that Kayla is being dismissed from the school immediately.”

Alford said her daughter was on probation since October due to behavior problems and the school said in a statement to NBC News that the rainbow photo was “the last straw.”

“Inaccurate media reports are circling stating that the student in question was expelled from our school solely for a social media post. In the fall, we met with the student to give her a final chance to begin to adhere to our code of conduct. Unfortunately, she did not live up to the agreement, and therefore, has been expelled.”

Kayla started public school last Friday and Alford says her daughter is adjusting to the changes.
