R&B superstar Chris Brown officially took accountability in a U.K. courtroom on Friday, pleading guilty to affray following a headline-making 2023 nightclub brawl in London. Pulling up to Southwark Crown Court in a sharp tan suit, gold-rimmed shades, and a St. Louis Cardinals fitted cap, the 37-year-old singer copped to the charge alongside his vocal coach and co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu.
Now, by pleading guilty to affray which covers using or threatening unlawful violence, prosecutors dropped the more severe charges against Breezy, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon.
As previously reported, the incident went down in the early morning hours of February 19, 2023, at Tape London, an exclusive private members’ club in the upscale Mayfair district. According to prosecutors, surveillance cameras captured Brown approaching music producer and former associate Abraham Diaw on the crowded dancefloor before striking him twice over the head with a glass bottle.
The Crown Prosecution Service reported that Akinlolu immediately jumped in, punching Diaw while the victim tried to flee, leaving Diaw kicked on the floor before he was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries.
Addressing the court and the media following the guilty plea, Senior Crown Prosecutor Claire Campbell did not shy away from words about the altercation. “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Campbell stated. “This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly, with the police and partners across the criminal justice system, to pursue cases like this, and prove that no one is above the law.”
Despite the heavy legal trouble hanging over his head, Brown stayed cool for the cameras and his loyal fan base outside the courthouse, stopping to sign autographs while fans played his music and shouted support. The singer, who previously posted a massive ($6.75 million) security bond to secure his bail and complete his world tour, remains free on bail as long as he surrenders his passport upon returning to the U.K. ahead of his court date.
Both Chris Brown and Akinlolu are scheduled to face the judge for formal sentencing on October 26. While the charge of affray carries a maximum penalty of up to three years in prison under U.K. law, the plea deal significantly reduces the jail time Brown was potentially facing had he gone to trial on the heavier felony-level assault charges.
