Grammy winning singer Chris Brown has one less thing to worry about now. This morning he walked into Southwark Crown Court in a cap, a black leather jacket and a face mask, with security around him and a few fans cheering from the sidelines. He later walked out still a free man.

The 37-year-old R&B superstar was handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for a 2023 bottle attack on a music producer at a Mayfair nightclub.

The sentence comes after Brown pleaded guilty to affray in July. In plain terms, a suspended sentence means he won’t serve the time unless he gets in trouble again during that 12-month window. Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray and was sentenced alongside him. Details of Akinlolu’s punishment weren’t immediately available in the reports we reviewed.

LONDON, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 26: Chris Brown signs autographs for fans as he leaves after being sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court on October 26, 2026 in London, England. The R&B singer and his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, pled guilty to affray in July, while earlier charges of assault and grievous bodily harm have been dropped. As we previously reported, to February 2023 at Tape London. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Brown cut through the crowd from the dancefloor and allegedly struck producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw twice over the head with a glass tequila bottle. Prosecutors say Akinlolu jumped in and punched Diaw, and that the pair kept going as Diaw tried to escape through the club. He was reportedly kicked while sitting defenseless on the floor. Diaw ended up at St Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries.

Brown’s defense team leaned on how short the whole thing was. Attorney Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC described the incident as ugly and unattractive, but told the court it lasted roughly 17 to 20 seconds, according to the footage.

She said Brown offers a profound apology to everyone who was in the building that night. Whether a few seconds on CCTV can explain a night Diaw says changed his life is a question the judge was clearly weighing.

The plea deal helped Brown on paper. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped the heavier counts, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault and possession of an offensive weapon. Those charges had put him in a much scarier spot. When he was first arrested at a Manchester hotel in May 2025, right before a U.K. tour, he was told he could face years behind bars.

A judge initially kept him in custody before granting a $5 million bail package, which let him keep touring Europe and North America while the case crawled forward.

Diaw isn’t just a name in a police report, either. He filed a $16 million lawsuit against Brown back in October 2023, claiming lacerations to his head, torn ligaments in his leg and lasting emotional trauma. That civil fight is its own separate lane, and Monday’s sentencing doesn’t settle it.

Either way, the court has spoken, and Brown now has the freedom to focus on what’s really important, his family and his amazing career.
