Yikes! A 45-year-old Chicago man who accidentally struck himself in the booty with his own firearm gets 10 years in prison for possessing the weapon that injured him.

Gregory Sherman, a 19-time convicted felon who’s been working as an anti-violence professional, has recently learned his fate after accidentally shooting himself in the butt inside of a Bucktown gas station on July 9, 2022. Stemming from the incident, Sherman has now been handed down a ten-year prison sentence for possessing the firearm that wounded him.

According to reports, in July 2022, Sherman walked into St. Elizabeth Hospital with a gunshot wound in his bottom. Prosecutors in his case said the bullet had passed entirely through his left butt cheek and struck his right foot. Initially, he allegedly told Chicago Police Department officials that he had been closing a dispensary in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee when there was a fight outside. He said someone fired a couple of shots, striking him as he walked by.

At a later time, the Chicago man unsuccessfully attempted to have his statements to the police suppressed at trial because he claimed he was under the influence of prescription drugs when police questioned him. Investigators eventually pieced things together and realized that while the Chicago man was speaking with officers, other officers responded to a call at the Shell gas station at 1768 West Armitage.

911 callers reported that a man had run out of the business after shooting himself in the butt. Also, surveillance footage from the gas station allegedly showed Sherman standing in line when a flash erupted near his back pocket upon adjusting his pants.

During Sherman’s bail hearing, a prosecutor claimed that after the flash went off, the Chicago man “jumped and then hobbled out of the gas station back to his vehicle.” He then allegedly took a detour during his escape to hand a “black object” to someone near the gas pumps. A shell casing was eventually found on the gas station floor, but police never found the gun.

Ultimately during his trial this Summer, Sherman, who served as his own attorney at times, was convicted of Class X armed habitual criminal and was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison by Judge Mary Brosnahan.

Sherman’s previous felon convictions include four 10-year sentences for robbing taxi drivers in 2015, along with a conviction for robbing a taxi driver in 2006. The latter crime handed him an 18-year prison sentence.

He’s also received 6 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2006, 6 years for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2006, 3 years for conspiring to bring cannabis into a penal institution in 2003, 3 years for conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a firearm in 2003, 3 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2003, 12 years for armed robbery in 2003, 3 years for forgery in 2001, 2 years for theft in 1999, 1 year for possessing cannabis in 1999, two 1-year sentences for possessing controlled substances in 1999 and 1997, and two 3-year sentences for narcotics in 1997.
