California Identifies Nail Salons As Source Of Coronavirus Community Spread
While announcing a four-phase plan to reopen the state’s economy which begins this Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom revealed that the community spread of the coronavirus in California began in a nail salon.

“This whole thing started in the state of California, the first community spread, in a nail salon,” Newsom said at a news briefing Thursday. “I’m very worried about that.” State health directors have put some “red flags” on nail salons as a high-risk business. However, Newsom said California nail salons won’t be allowed to reopen until the state’s phase 3. The state is currently shifting from phase 1 to phase 2.
As many are aware, community spread is defined as when the origin of an infection can’t be immediately determined. As Forbes notes, this means that a COVID-19 patient didn’t travel recently to China or had immediate contact with an infected person.
Newsom’s office didn’t share whether the infected person was a worker or customer, wherein the state the salon is located, and how many other infections are linked to that nail salon.
California is just one of several states that are planning to reopen even repost the growing spread of the novel coronavirus.
