Brittany Renner, 33, is addressing her conversion to Islam and what she’s learned through her journey. She admits, “Islam provided that protection I needed while I was rebuilding myself.”

In late 2024, Renner first began wearing a hijab. It shocked social users until they soon learned it was a decision linked to her secret and brief marriage to rapper Kevin Gates. However, by mid-2025, Renner stopped wearing the religious garment, sparking online debate about her faith and clout allegations. Despite backlash, Renner appears to remain Muslim, simply opting to no longer wear a hijab.
To note, in Islam, it is a personal choice for women to wear one; although it is mandatory in many Muslim countries. In July 2025, Renner told PEOPLE that since converting to Islam, her life has become “better in every single category.”
That same month, on Instagram, Renner continued to tell the public, “I don’t ask for permission or forgiveness, no am I in the business of convincing.” In a similar Instagram post from the month before, she declared:
“I’m not interested in shrinking myself to fit in anywhere. I don’t have blind loyalty to any person, place, or thing. I also don’t need excuses to do what I want to do because I accept whatever comes behind my decisions. It’s still Alhamdulillah for everything! Hope this helps.”

On May 2, Brittany Renner and rapper Kevin Gates hit what appeared to be their first red carpet together. At the ‘Basketball Wives: Los Angeles’ Season 12 premiere, Gates courted Renner. At the event, Renner was spotted sporting a huge rock on her left ring finger.
By June 7, Renner revealed the two were already a done deal. She admitted they got married on April 6th and divorced as of May 28th. Before reportedly starting their romance in 2022, the duo had a slow burn. They had been seen many times flirting with each other online and at various events.
While speaking with Real 92.3’s Bootleg Kev, Renner shared, “We got married April 6 and divorced May 28.” However, she added that she and Gates are under the rules and laws of Islam, so there is a caveat.

Since Renner’s divorce from Gates and dropping her hijab, she is now opening up about her conversion to Islam. In a promo clip for her new podcast, ‘Facets Of Life With Brittany,’ Renner shared:
“I’m more than my body. I’m more than the sexy. I’m tired of feeling like a f**king circus animal. And Islam provided that protection I needed while I was rebuilding myself. I felt like a hermit crab without its shell. Quite literally cloaked myself with my clothing, with my hijab.
And even though — yes, I’m a spiritual person and these things that I’m even learning about Islam, just religion, they feel a little counterproductive — religion provided me the structure I never had. I had a new set of eyes when I came out of my hijab.
I never knew I was capable of such discipline. There’s a time and a place for everything. That’s definitely something I learned there. Nobody is entitled to anything, not a handshake or a hug. And I am more than this physical vessel. Hijab or not, the right people, person, opportunities will see that.
I got to lead with me. It was nice because I’m like, oh, you know, I didn’t have to suck in in my outfits. It’s like, I didn’t have to think about doing my hair. It was just me. And that was very healing within itself to just be Brittany. No performing, no butt cheeks out and shorts that look like underwear. Just Brittany.”
