According to the retired airport baggage handler, his 71-year-old terminally ill wife, Dyanne Mansfield, asked him to take her life “when things get bad for me.” The plan was for him to leave with her, but he survived after cutting his wrists and neck.

Per reports, on the morning of March 24 2021, Mr. Mansfield was found lying in a pool of his blood at his home in Hale, Greater Manchester, U.K.

Meanwhile, the body of his Mrs. Mansfield was discovered slumped over in a chair at the bottom of the couple’s garden.

Before being found, Mr. Mansfield called 9-9-9 and told the operator that he had killed his wife of 40 years at 9 p.m. the day before he tried killing himself.

When police and paramedics arrived, they said Mrs. Mansfield had bled heavily via a 6.3 inch “gaping incised wound” and that her windpipe had been severed.

Next to her body were three knives and a lump hammer. Authorities also found a plastic wallet with a handwritten note by Mr. Mansfield siting under two bricks.

The note gave instructions on where to find his house keys and how to contact his sister. It partially read, “We have decided to take our own lives.”

Another note addressed to his family read:

“We are sorry to burden you with this but there is no other way. We made a pact that when it got too bad for Dyanne we would end it.

I couldn’t bear to live without Dyanne and as the months progressed and as things got worse, it only reinforced our decision that the time has arrived. We hope you all understand.

Don’t get too upset. We have had a wonderful and happy life together.”

Neither of the notes were signed by Mrs. Mansfield.

Police ended up arrested Mr. Mansfield at the scene on suspicion of murder. He was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated and underwent surgery for wounds to his neck and both wrists.

Mr. Mansfield, who was denied bail, denied being guilty of murder and pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, as he had acted “through duress of circumstances.”

During the trial, many of the couple’s friends and family members spoke Mr. Mansfield’s character and his “unswerving devotion” to his wife.

A British jury of 10 men and 2 women took 90 minutes to find Mansfield not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.

But, the judge felt otherwise, cleared him, and said, “You were under immense emotional pressure. I am entirely satisfied that you were acting out of love for your wife.”
