Samantha Hutchinson, 34, and her husband, Aric Hutchinson, were leaving their wedding reception in Folly Beach when a drunk driver rear-ended their golf cart. On their GoFundMe page, Aric’s mother stated that he and two relatives, Ben and Brogan Garrett, were injured in the crash when the golf cart was tossed over 100 yards and flipped many times. The driver was identified as Jamie Lee Komoroski, 25, and she was charged with DUI involving death and reckless homicide.

“I was handed Aric’s wedding ring in a plastic bag at the hospital five hours after Sam placed it on his finger, and they read each other their vows. Aric has lost the love of his life,” his mother said.

According to the New York Post, Aric suffered a brain injury, multiple broken bones, and bruising on his face. He remains in serious condition and underwent two reconstructive surgeries. The GoFundMe was created to help pay for medical expenses and the bride’s funeral.

Currently, Komoroski is on suicide watch at the Charleston County Jail after she explained to an officer that she wanted to end her life. She is held without bail, and there were no updates about a pending court date.

After the couple’s tragic case went viral, social media users offered their condolences and commented about the dangers of drunk driving. “What an absolute tragedy. I’ve seen too many senseless deaths at the hands of impaired drivers, including friends and colleagues. I can’t believe people still get behind the wheel after drinking. If you drink, DON’T DRIVE!!,” one Twitter user wrote.

Samantha’s job, XenTegra, wrote in a statement that she was an “integral member ” of their team.

“She carried a light about her, one that shined so brightly upon everyone with whom she interacted. Simply put, Samantha brought an abundance of joy and laughter to the workplace.”
